Dupuytren's Disease Treatment.

Dupuytren’s Disease Treatment

Our innovative treatment of focused Shockwave and Extracorporeal Magneto Transduction Therapy (EMTT) has helped people with Dupuytren’s Disease, also known as Dupuytren’s Contracture, to conquer their issues.

Dupuytren’s Diseaseis a progressive condition that affects the connective tissue in the hand, resulting in the thickening and tightening of the palmar fascia. This leads to the development of nodules and cords that cause the fingers to bend inward towards the palm, limiting hand function and dexterity.

Although the exact cause of Dupuytren’s Disease remains unknown, certain risk factors have been identified – it is more common in individuals over the age of 50; men are more likely to develop the disease than women; family history of Dupuytren’s Disease increases the likelihood of  it developing; people of Northern European descent are at a higher risk, while smoking and excessive alcohol consumption have been linked to the disease.

Traditional treatments for the disease have focused on managing symptoms and slowing its progression. These include – physical therapy including exercises and stretching to maintain finger mobility and function; wearing a splint at night to help straighten the affected fingers or having corticosteroid injections to help reduce inflammation and slow the disease’s progression. In more severe cases, invasive procedures have been necessary.

Shockwave Therapy & Dupuytren’s Disease

Focused shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy shockwaves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

The aim of shockwave therapy as a Dupuytren’s disease treatment is to aid and accelerate the recovery process. We recommended you seek a consultation as early as possible if you are a sufferer.

Research and our own findings with patients has shown that ESWT has been able to reduce pain and inflammation and break down the thickened tissue in the affected area.

It will also stimulate collagen production and promote tissue regeneration.

Together these actions can help to reduce pain and improve range of motion and unlike surgical treatments such as fasciotomy or fasciectomy, ESWT does not require any incisions or anesthesia, reducing the risk of complications and allowing for a faster recovery.

Shockwave Therapy & Dupuytren’s Disease Research

Focused ShockWave Therapy (FSWT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive treatment for Dupuytren’s Disease, offering several benefits over traditional treatments and even other types of shockwave therapy, such as radial shockwave therapy (RSWT).

FSWT utilises high-energy acoustic waves to target specific areas of the palmar fascia affected by Dupuytren’s Disease. Several clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of FSWT as a Dupuytren’s Disease treatment.

A study published in the journal “Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology” in 2019 demonstrated that FSWT significantly reduced pain and improved hand function in patients with Dupuytren’s Disease compared to a control group receiving sham treatment.

In another study published in “The Journal of Hand Surgery” in 2020, FSWT was shown to significantly improve range of motion, grip strength, and overall hand function in patients with Dupuytren’s Disease over a 12-week period.

These studies suggest that FSWT is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with Dupuytren’s Disease.

Focused Shockwave Therapy vs. Radial Shockwave Therapy

Both FSWT and RSWT utilise shockwaves to treat Dupuytren’s Disease; however, there are some crucial differences between the two therapies:

Mechanism of action: FSWT uses high-energy shockwaves that are focused on specific areas of the affected tissue, while RSWT generates lower-energy, unfocused shockwaves that disperse radially from the applicator.

Depth of penetration: FSWT can penetrate deeper into the tissue, allowing for more precise targeting of the affected fascia, whereas RSWT has limited penetration depth and may not adequately reach the affected area in all cases.

Efficacy: Clinical trials have shown FSWT to be more effective in reducing pain and improving hand function than RSWT for treating Dupuytren’s Disease.

These studies are in line with our own experience of successfully treating patients with frozen shoulder.

Dupuytren's Disease EMTT Treatment.

We administer EMTT through a handheld device that is placed over the affected area. The treatment is painless and non-invasive, and typically takes just a few minutes to complete. Patients may receive several EMTT sessions over the course of a few weeks, depending on the severity of their symptoms and their history with the problem.

EMTT Therapy for Dupuytren’s Disease

We are now using ElectroMagnetic Transduction Therapy (EMTT) in conjunction with Shockwave therapy as we have found the combination of the two treatments especially effective for dealing with Dupuytren’s Disease.

EMTT is a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic waves to stimulate healing in the affected area. The treatment works by producing a pulsed electromagnetic field that penetrates the tissues of the shoulder joint and stimulates cellular activity. This increased cellular activity can help to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, and promote tissue repair, all of which can improve the symptoms of Dupuytren’s Disease.

While clinical trials specifically investigating EMTT as a Dupuytren’s Disease treatment are limited, the therapy has shown promise in treating other fibrotic conditions and soft tissue disorders. In a clinical trial published in “Lasers in Medical Science” in 2019, EMTT was found to be effective in reducing pain and improving hand function in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, another condition affecting the hand’s soft tissues.

One of the major advantages of EMTT is that it is a non-invasive treatment that does not require any medication or surgery. This makes it a safe and convenient treatment option for patients who are looking for a non-invasive alternative to more invasive treatments.

We are one of the few clinics in the country offering this as a solution to this painful condition and we recommend you book an appointment soon.
