Knee calcification physio and shockwave therapy

Knee Calcification Treatment

Our innovative treatment of Focused Shockwave and Extracorporeal Magneto Transduction Therapy (EMTT) has helped people with Knee Calcification, to conquer their issues, enabling them to achieve a pain-free existence and, for athletes, a successful return to their sport without any difficulty.

The shockwaves help to break up the calcium deposits and stimulate the body’s natural healing process, which can help to reduce pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the knee joint.

One of the main benefits of shockwave therapy for knee calcification is that it is a non-invasive treatment option that does not require surgery or medication. This means that patients can avoid the risks and side effects associated with these treatments. What’s more, shockwave therapy is a relatively quick and simple procedure that allows patients to  return to their normal activities soon after the treatment.

Another benefit of shockwave therapy for knee calcification (or chondrocalcinosis), is that it has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and inflammation in the knee joint. This can help patients to regain mobility and perform daily activities more easily for patients of all ages, with few side effects.

Shockwave Therapy & Knee Calcification

We use Focused ShockWave Therapy (FSWT), also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). It’s a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy shockwaves to stimulate healing in injured tissues.

Unlike radial shockwave therapy, which spreads out in all directions, focused shockwave therapy targets a specific area of the body, allowing for more precise treatment.

We use Focused shockwave therapy to treat conditions such as knee calcification, heel spurs, rotator cuff tendinitis and many other conditions. It is more powerful than radial shockwave therapy, which we find makes it more effective in treating severe cases of knee calcification.

Shockwave & Knee Calcification Research

Several clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of shockwave therapy for knee calcification.

In a randomised controlled trial published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research in 2019, researchers compared the effectiveness of radial shockwave therapy and focused shockwave therapy in the treatment of knee calcification.

The study found that while both treatments were effective in reducing pain and improving function, focused shockwave therapy was more effective than radial shockwave therapy in the long term.

Another randomised controlled trial, published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science in 2021, compared the effectiveness of focused shockwave therapy and ultrasound therapy in the treatment of knee calcification.

The study found that both treatments were effective in reducing pain and improving function, but that focused shockwave therapy was more effective than ultrasound therapy in the short-term.

These studies are in line with our own experience of successfully treating patients with frozen shoulder.

Physical Therapy for Knee Calcification

Our Physiotherapists use physical therapy in combination with Shockwave therapy and EMTT, helping to reduce pain and improve function – including.

  1. Stretching exercises: these can help to improve flexibility and reduce stiffness in the knee joint. We may recommend stretching exercises such as hamstring stretches, quadriceps stretches, and calf stretches to help improve mobility in the knee joint.
  2. Strengthening exercises: can help to improve muscle strength & stability in the knee joint, helping to reduce pain and improve function. Sometimes we may recommend exercises such as leg presses, squats, And lunges to help strengthen the muscles in the thigh and leg.
  3. Low-impact aerobic exercises – such as walking or cycling, can help to improve cardiovascular health and reduce pain and inflammation in the knee joint. We may recommend low-impact aerobic exercise as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for knee calcification.
  4. Manual therapy: Massage and joint mobilisation, can help to reduce pain & improve joint function in the knee joint. We may use these techniques to help improve mobility & reduce stiffness in the knee joint.
  5. Ice and heat therapy – can help to reduce pain and inflammation in the knee joint. Often, we recommend applying ice or heat to the affected area to help reduce pain and improve mobility.
  6. Assistive devices – such as knee braces or crutches, can help to support the knee joint and reduce pain and inflammation all though these are a last resort.
Knee calcification EMTT therapy.

We administer EMTT through a handheld device that is placed over the affected area. The treatment is painless and non-invasive, and typically takes just a few minutes to complete. Patients may receive several EMTT sessions over the course of a few weeks, depending on the severity of their symptoms and the extent of their injury.

EMTT Therapy for Knee Calcification

We are now using ElectroMagnetic Transduction Therapy (EMTT) in conjunction with Shockwave therapy as we have found the combination of the two treatments especially effective for dealing with Knee Calcification.

EMTT is a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic waves to stimulate healing in the affected area. The treatment works by producing a pulsed electromagnetic field that penetrates the tissues of the shoulder joint and stimulates cellular activity. This increased cellular activity can help to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, and promote tissue repair, all of which can improve the symptoms of knee calcification..

Research has shown that EMTT can be an effective treatment for Knee Calcification.

One of the major advantages of EMTT is that it is a non-invasive treatment that does not require any medication or surgery. This makes it a safe and convenient treatment option for patients who are looking for a non-invasive alternative to more invasive treatments.

We are one of the few clinics in the country offering this as a solution to this painful condition and we recommend you book an appointment soon.
